1. VENICE CITY BREAK

2 nights / 3 days

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, this is a unique city of its kind, almost unreal, immersed as it is in that ancient silence seeped in history and magic that brings to mind the ghosts of the doges and other illustrious personalities who have lived in this city and tried to unravel its mystery. Venice is just superb, more than a city it is a true myth, the capital of art and dreams, difficult to compare with other metropolises. Its indefinable and unusual charm pervades every corner, and every glimpse. It’s fascinating to travel its canals by gondola, with the majestic palazzos that reflect in its waters creating an atmosphere of poetry and mystery. Splendid any time of year: in the winter when the snow transforms it into a wonder world, during the joyful festivities of Carnival, and during the high-society atmosphere of the Venice Film Festival.

2. VENICE CARNIVAL WEEKEND

2 nights / 3 days

At the beginning of the 15th century, groups of young Venetian noblemen and gentlemen opened clubs with the aim of amusing and entertaining its patrons. These groups were known as the “compagnie de calza” (stocking companies) called this because of the distinguishing colors of their hoisery. The republic’s government encouraged these groups, conceding licences as they were requested as the groups, in turn, kept the city alive with merriment. They staged shows of every sort: equestrian, nautical, theatrical. The population had wide access to this entertainment and eventually became involved too. A new form of theatre grew out of this new enthusiasm and independence of expression as performers gradually broke away from the traditional theatre, “commedia dell’Arte” was born. Commedia dell’Arte was the result of spontaneous invention, and Carnevale was the ideal stage for this new vivacious expression. The atmosphere of this city is always unique and fascinating, but during the time of Carnival of Venice, its charm is irresistible. In the biggest square and in St. Mark’s Square you can admire the many events like concerts and mask parades that take place there in this period of the year, but in the whole city the Venice Carnival gives you magic and unique encounters. Penetrating in the small calli (typical Venetian street), with their magic halo you will feel sensations that only this city can let you feel. The Carnival of Venice 2006 never stops, and while in the old palaces take place sumptuous parties in costumes that bring you back to the times of the Republic of Venice, outside, in the streets and in the squares this event preserves its most popular side.

7. VENICE & THE BAROQUE MUSIC BY VIVALDI

2 nights / 3 days

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was born in Venice on 4th March 1678; he was introduced to the study of violin by his father, Giovanni Battista, himself a violin player at St. Mark's Chapel. Later on, in 1703, he took holy orders, but, owing to his ill health, he celebrated Mass only for "a year or so". The beginning of Vivaldi's connection with "la Pietti " dates back to 1703, and from a document of 1704 we learn that his title was "Maestro di Violino di Choro " and that, among his other tasks, he had also that of buying the instruments for the Chapel, and he most probably acted, though not officially, as Master of Concerts as well.

In December 1725 his op. 8 was published in Amsterdam: it contains twelve concertos under the title Il cimento dell'armonia e dell' invention, that is a contest where harmony, which represents the rational side of the work, competes with invention, or imagination. The publication was received with great enthusiasm all over Europe, and an extraordinary success was won mainly by the opening compositions, Le ‘quattro stagioni’. In the second half of the twenties Vivaldi resumed the management of the Teatro S. Angelo, Venice, and wrote new operas. Vivaldi was in direct contact with the Austrian Emperor Kart VI, to whom he dedicated his cp. 9, a collection of twelve concertos entitled La cetra, and he went to Vienna as well. About 1730 Vivaldi was in Prague, where some of his operas were performed at Count von Sporck 's theatre. During the carnival of 1732 He was in Verona to stage his new opera ‘La fida ninfa’ on a libretto by the famous man of letters Scipione Maffei; that opera had been chosen to inaugurate the Teatro Filarmonico by Francesco Bibiena. In 1733-34 be went back to the Teatro S. Angelo, Venice, and in 1735 he met Carlo Goldoni . In 1740, for some reason, which has not yet been explained, Vivaldi went to Vienna, and there he died in poverty on July 28th, 1741.

10. THE SAN DANIELE HAM FESTIVAL

2 nights / 3 days

“Aria di Festa” is the great feast of San Daniele ham which, as undisputed protagonist and leitmotiv of the whole event, continues to exert an unforeseen appeal on a public of regular consumers, who still enjoy the experience of rediscovering its taste, making comparison and entering the fresh shadow of its “cathedrals” i.e. its ham-factories.

“Aria di Festa” is part of the tradition of San Daniele ham, as it revives the ancient “ham festival” originated from the fairs that took place in the town since the Middle Ages.

As important crossroads for economical interests and trade exchanges, and natural meeting point of different cultures, the town of San Daniele has always had an important role within the community of the period. Nowadays, this role is attested by the strong tourist appeal of the ham and its feast. As in the past the ancient “delicatessen sellers” exposed their products in the streets of the town, so nowadays modern ham factories open their doors to welcome several visitors and greedy tasters. The charm and attractiveness of the ham is probably due to the fact that it belongs to the deepest taste culture and food tradition and it represents one of the most typical European products both for production and consumption spread.

"Aria di Festa" is a cultural, tourist and gastronomic event of international renown, one of the most eagerly awaited appointments in Italy. For the first time it took place this year at the end of June following a new format which involved besides the whole town centre, literally turned into a large "tasting room", ten ham-making plants which opened their doors to the visitors eager to discover the secrets of the famous ham.

Ten ham factories open to the public of Aria di Festa following three different ways, indicated by three different colours which will be visible on road signals and information material:

·  "SAN DANIELE" TASTING HAM-FACTORIES In these ham factories visitors can enjoy San Daniele ham together with wine from Friuli, good music and entertainments.

·  "SAN DANIELE" MENU’ HAM-FACTORIES This new format makes guests discover some particular gastronomic coupling with San Daniele ham. The available seats are limited and can be reserved at the ham factories.

·  HAM-FACTORIES WITH GUIDED VISIT TO "SAN DANIELE" These two ham factories are glad to welcome their guests for a detailed guided visit inside their ham factories.

Through a guided visit, the ten “open ham factories” invite people to discover the secrets of the POD processing, from the introduction of the fresh thigh into the establishment, to the curing stage lasting at least twelve month.

On Saturday and Sunday until 5.00 o’clock in the evening the Consorzio del Prosciutto di San Daniele organizes every hour a guided ham tasting for groups of no more than 50 people. Come and discover the peculiarities of San Daniele ham through information about its processing, preservation, organoleptic characteristics and the way to enjoy it together with other local products and wines. Near the ham factories visitors can experience a particular country atmosphere, with Italian swine, horses, cows and other typical farmyard animals, recreated in cooperation with the Breeders Association of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Experts will be at public disposal to satisfy any curiosity.

13. VENICE & TUSCANY

6 nights / 7 days

As always, it has been a challenge, a dramatic adventure. Now it's finally over, the race against the clock right up to the last minute. Another guide, another region, with the same reasons for existence, the same desire to recount, to amaze and delight, and the increased awareness of discovering a country which is always different and always true to itself. Tuscany is no exception. The common denominator leads us page after page in the discovery of a reality which is already a myth, of a land which is already a dream. This is love at first sight, and the desire to live it to the full. It's consuming nostalgia and genuine wonder, or else it's indifference. There are no half measures, no clichés. It's all here, concealed in stones which whisper their history: cities, towns, castles, and cathedrals, palazzi and bridges. Everything is art, everything is unique, vast genius. Maybe it's a generic inheritance, or more simply a "modus vivendi". You can perceive it, but not describe it. Just try, for example, to summarise in a few clear concepts Roberto Benigni's extraordinary, awkward form of communication. This is Tuscanness. And so are the colours of Chianti, - whether we're speaking of the wine or the countryside - the genius of Leonardo and the Florentine beefsteak. The rest is history. Rivers of ink have flowed - the Arno doesn't need them - in attempts to say what has already been said, already written. The truth is that we didn't discover Tuscany. But we have tried to re-perceive and interpret it, each bringing to the task his or her own cultural baggage and experience of life. We have all contributed to make it different and we would have liked to do more, but a guide by definition remains only a first step towards knowledge. We only hope that it will prove a useful companion along the way. To transmit what is perhaps most aptly encompassed by the term "Tuscanness" is frankly no easy task.
